Jubilee Year

The Holy Father decreed that on Sunday, December 29th, 2024, in every Cathedral, diocesan bishops are to celebrate Holy Mass as the solemn opening of the Jubilee Year. As part of the opening of the Jubilee Year celebration in every diocese, the Holy Father also encouraged a procession to the Cathedral church; the procession symbolizes the journey of hope that, illumined by the word of God, unites the faithful [6]. These events are envisioned for the Cathedral (and Co-Cathedrals) only. A holy door is not envisioned, neither at the Cathedral nor at designated parishes during this Jubilee Year, but a Cross, instead, as the symbol of our hope.

• Pilgrimages to any of the Jubilee Sites in Rome, Holy Land, or the local Cathedral along with participation in one of the following: Mass, Liturgy of the Word, Liturgy of the Hours, Stations of the Cross, Rosary, or Penance service.
• Pious Visits to the Jubilee Sites including Eucharistic Adoration and prayer, concluding with the Our Father, the Profession of Faith, and approved Marian devotion (such as the Hail Mary or a Rosary).
• In case of illness or physical impediment, one may obtain the indulgence, properly disposed, reciting an Our Father, the Profession of Faith and the other prayers described above while offering up their sufferings.
• Works of mercy and penance, including works of charity and service toward those brothers and sisters burdened by various needs, thereby making a pilgrimage to Christ in them; abstaining, in a spirit of penance, at least for one day of the week from futile distractions or superfluous consumption; donating a proportionate sum of money to the poor; supporting works of a religious or social nature especially in support of the defense and protection of life in all its phases. 

On May 9, 2024, Pope Francis released a Papal Bull of Indiction which formally announced the Jubilee Year of Hope. The document was entitled: 
Spes non condfundit – “Hope does not disappoint” (Rom 5:5). In it, Pope Francis explains the reasons for this theme of the Jubilee Year: 
“Hope is … the central message of the coming Jubilee that, in accordance with an ancient tradition, the Pope proclaims every twenty-five years.... For everyone, may the Jubilee be a moment of genuine, personal encounter with the Lord Jesus, the “door” (cf. Jn 10:7.9) of our salvation, whom the Church is charged to proclaim always, everywhere and to all as ‘our hope’ (1 Tim 1:1)” [Spes non confundit, 1].
